IDEASTHESIA
Sensing concepts - sensing ideas

“Ideasthesia” proposes a sensorial journey into our deepest self: our genome. This unique journey will progress through three consecutive stages: acknowledging (sequence), building (synthesize) and modifying (CRISPR-Cas9 mediated gene editing) our genotype to enable visualization of artificial phenotypes in a comprehensive and ludic fashion. Exploring concepts like transgenesis, enhanced or inhibited gene expression and optogenetics, the guests will be able to interact with their true molecular selves and experience modified forms of perception and projection, being both objects and subjects of these illusions.

“Ideasthesia” is an immersive and interactive 360º installation about the mind and the search for awareness in which the public experiences a sensory voyage where the line is blurred between the physical and the digital world, between the real and the imaginary. Using cutting-edge multimedia technology to produce creative environments, through mapping, infinite space, augmented reality, interactivity, bio-video art, music and animation, the audience is invited to actively participate as actors and not just as mere spectators. The video installation art becomes a theatrical stage where things appear, move across, and then disappear, where awareness becomes attention and action, and your brain fantasizes your conscious reality.

The project combines art, technology and science to explore and bring people closer to the scientific knowledge and discourse in an experiential, aesthetic and informal way, bringing together different communities and artistic disciplines.

“Ideasthesia” is a site-specific multimedia / scientific and sensorial experience, using video immersive projection mapping and interactivity as a tool for storytelling and audience connection, bringing an alternative cultural knowledge by actively entering the very heart of the piece, posing ethical questions with an unshakable condition that the future is still “open” to our chosen actions.

By understanding ourselves as artists and researchers and inventors at the same time, we allow our work to blur the lines between those disciplines. Our work tackles the countless questions surrounding the new principles of communication, lifestyle and art emerging in the afterglow of the genomic revolution.

We are driven by a deep fascination for the enormous potential technology holds for cross-genre artistic expression and we have been working on and developing interactive pieces and studied the audience’s cognitive response and transformative experience. How can this new form of storytelling be used for more inclusive stories? We no longer live in a world of the single tale.

Artistic Team:

Laia Cabrera & Co. is an award-winning artistic team searching for innovative ways of using the space and visual imaginary as a tool for narrative storytelling and audience connection, driven by both scenographic and dramaturgical aspects and creating immersive content experiences in contemporary artwork. We work in the field of interactive video art installations, creating a wide range of artworks presented worldwide in leading venues, art galleries and festivals. The team members are filmmaker Laia Cabrera, visual artist-animator Isabelle Duverger, performing artist Catherine Correa, scientist and researcher Dr. Alvaro Cuesta-Domínguez, interactive designer Aniol Saurina-Masó and composer Nana Simopoulos.
